My Village People is an immersive multimedia tour and showcase of Nigeria’s rich and diverse cultures, explored city by city, town by town, through the voices of indigenous people; ‘tour guides’ (monarchs, community leaders, etc.) who live out these cultures daily, particularly older generations before their stories are lost due to aging. They are the “village people” in My Village People.
The name My Village People is an ode to the indigenous people who live out these cultures daily, recognising that it is they who shape and sustain indigenous culture. It is also a deliberate attempt to reframe the negative connotations that surround the term “village people” in pop culture discourses, where they are often portrayed as evil, fetish, or backward. We are flipping that narrative by affirming that village people are not villains, but custodians of rich, beautiful cultures worthy of celebration.
Meet the creators and cultural custodians bringing these stories to life through film, photography, and research.
